About Creating Better Li in Nursing Homes
The vision: Nearly two million people live in approximately seventeen thousand Nursing Homes in America today. They are there because physical or mental impairments prevent them from being able to live independently. It is the vision of this book that every one of them li every day with the following guarantees of dignity, comfort and hope:
- Their living
environment is one which reflects the comfort and security of home. It is
furnished and decorated primarily to create a home environment and secondarily
to accomodate any special physical or mental need. It is also a place that
is secure. One which they can count on as being theirs as long as they want
it.
- Their sense
of worth and purpose is affirmed, supported, validated and elevated by every
friend, family member, staff member, program manager, physician, therapist,
and anyone else with whom they come in contact. Their personal care is designed
around their individual tastes, habits and preferences, not around the shifts,
schedules and efficiencies of the nursing home or long term care facility.

to day life is packed with visual, verbal, and kenesthetic affirmations
of their intrinsic value, and they are treated as if they were the most
